![]() ![]() In April 1945, American forces landed on Okinawa, where heavy fighting continued until June. ![]() Offensives were undertaken to reduce the Japanese forces remaining in Bougainville, New Guinea and the Philippines. In the Pacific, the Allies returned to the Philippines, recaptured Burma, and invaded Borneo. At the same time, the public was becoming war-weary, and demanding that long-serving servicemen be sent home. Deferments for groups such as agricultural workers were tightened, and there was consideration of drafting women. America's reserves of manpower were running out. In December 1944, American battle casualties hit an all-time monthly high of 88,000 as a result of the German Ardennes Offensive. Nearly one million of the casualties occurred during the last year of the war, from June 1944 to June 1945. The 1.25 million battle casualties incurred in total by the United States in World War II included both military personnel killed in action and wounded in action. Most Japanese military units fought fiercely, ensuring that the Allied victory would come at an enormous cost. In 1945, the Pacific War between the Empire of Japan and the Allies entered its fourth year. White and green: Areas still controlled by Japan included Korea, Taiwan, Indochina, and much of China, including most of the main cities, and the Dutch East Indies Situation of the Pacific War on 1 August 1945. Supporters claim that the atomic bombings were necessary to bring an end to the war with minimal American casualties critics believe that the bombings were unnecessary and a war crime, and highlight the moral and ethical implications of the intentional nuclear attack on civilians. Scholars have extensively studied the effects of the bombings on the social and political character of subsequent world history and popular culture, and there is still much debate concerning the ethical and legal justification for the bombings. Though Hiroshima had a sizable military garrison, most of the dead were civilians. ![]() For months afterward, many people continued to die from the effects of burns, radiation sickness, and injuries, compounded by illness and malnutrition. Over the next two to four months, the effects of the atomic bombings killed between 90,000 and 146,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000 and 80,000 people in Nagasaki roughly half occurred on the first day. Three days later, a Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. On 6 August, a Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima, to which Prime Minister Kantarō Suzuki reiterated the Japanese government's commitment to ignore the Allies' demands and fight on. ![]() These targets were chosen because they were large urban areas that also held militarily significant facilities. The consent of the United Kingdom was obtained for the bombing, as was required by the Quebec Agreement, and orders were issued on 25 July by General Thomas Handy, the acting chief of staff of the United States Army, for atomic bombs to be used against Hiroshima, Kokura, Niigata, and Nagasaki. The Japanese government ignored the ultimatum. The Allies called for the unconditional surrender of the Imperial Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, the alternative being "prompt and utter destruction". The 509th Composite Group of the United States Army Air Forces was trained and equipped with the specialized Silverplate version of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, and deployed to Tinian in the Mariana Islands. By July 1945, the Allies' Manhattan Project had produced two types of atomic bombs: " Fat Man", a plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapon and " Little Boy", an enriched uranium gun-type fission weapon. The war in the European theatre concluded when Germany surrendered on, and the Allies turned their full attention to the Pacific War. This undertaking was preceded by a conventional bombing and firebombing campaign that devastated 64 Japanese cities. In the final year of World War II, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of the Japanese mainland. It remains the only time in history that nuclear weapons have been used in combat. The Japanese government signed the instrument of surrender on 2 September, effectively ending the war. Japan surrendered to the Allies on 15 August, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan and invasion of Japanese-occupied Manchuria. The aerial bombings together killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in an armed conflict. On 6 and 9 August 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. ![]() ![]() When professor Anthony Wagner, director of the Stanford Memory Laboratory examined a decade of studies on multitaskers, he found: And as we’ve seen, all those switches come with a cost. Research has found that, on average, we switch between apps and websites more than 300 times a day and check email or chat every 6 minutes. ![]() To help you get started, here are just a few of the ways that single-tasking beats out multitasking in the long-run: Single-tasking rebuilds your focus “ feels fun, even if it’s draining our cognitive reserves.” Whereas context switching is fun and more likely to give us a hit of dopamine–the brain’s ‘reward chemical’.Īs neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley of the University of California explains in Quartz: Our brains are constantly filtering outside stimuli and our own thoughts to keep us on track. The allure of multitasking goes beyond just workplace culture and expectations.įocusing for long periods of time is hard. How to break the cycle of multitasking: Understand the true benefits of single-tasking To break out of this cycle, you need to understand that focusing on one thing at a time is a superpower. The more you multitask, the worse you get at finishing your work, which means you have more to do, which makes you more likely to keep multitasking to do it all. Multitasking at work also has a tendency to self-multiply. And once you start, it’s almost impossible to stop. This is like the work equivalent to texting and driving. In a 2010 study, Harvard psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert found that people spend almost 47% of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they’re currently doing. When you’re facing an overburdened workload, unsure of what to do, and constantly bombarded with communication that wants your attention, you’re going to try and do it all. (Don’t need to be convinced? Jump to The neuroscientist’s 3-step guide to single-tasking!) In this short guide, we’re going to cover the most common culprits that cause you to multitask, why single-tasking is a better option for everyone, and how you can start harnessing the incredible power of doing one thing at a time. ![]() On the other hand, single-tasking is proven to help you get tasks done quicker and at a higher quality than trying to do multiple things at once. ![]() And each of those switches takes a toll with researchers saying you lose 20% of your overall productivity for each task you try to take on at once! What feels like doing multiple tasks at a time is actually our brain frantically switching back and forth. And as expectations rise and deadlines get tighter, multitasking seems like our only option.īut here’s the problem: Multitasking is a myth. It’s human nature to try and do multiple things at once. All this despite the fact I’m trying to practice ‘single-tasking’-aka doing one thing at a time. When was the last time you gave 100% of your attention to, well, anything? Even now as I’m ‘focusing’ on writing, I have 9 open browser tabs, 2 random note docs, and a desktop filled with files, folders, and documents competing for my attention. ![]() ![]() ![]() The following screenshot shows Internet Explorer 11 with Compatibility View configured for "". Both this and the Gradient Overlay effect are non-destructive – even after they’ve been applied with the Macro and you’re back in the regular Photo Persona, you can go back and adjust them if necessary. The second part is a simple Brightness / Contrast adjustment layer which is useful for fine-tuning the finished picture. ![]() By using a black-to-white gradient at the appropriate angle and setting its blend mode to overlay, this effect will darken the top of the picture and lighten the bottom. The first is a Gradient Overlay effect applied directly to the image. You can’t control the ‘height’ of the graduated area in the way you can by adjusting the position of a real filter, but that matters less often than you might think, and what our Macro lacks in sophistication it makes up for with simplicity and effectiveness. Our graduated filter effect is not terribly sophisticated. The contrast in brightness between the sky and the foreground can vary considerably from one shot to the next, so this kind of control is essential. To show how this works we’re going to create a graduated filter effect Macro, with control over both the strength of the effect and the brightness of the image. It’s even possible to add user interaction to key steps, so that with just a couple of slider adjustments the effect can be tailored to each individual image. Version 1.5 brings a whole host of new features, including the ability to record a series of complex image-editing actions as a Macro, which can then be saved in the program’s Macro Library for re-use on other images. Best of all, Affinity Photo is now available for Windows users too. It’s often difficult to balance the brightness of the sky with the ground in landscape photography, but here’s a technique for adding drama to the sky and brilliance to the foreground which we can save as a Macro to use again and again.Īffinity Photo is an extremely powerful photo editing application which can transform your images with effects, filters, layers and masking tools, and at a surprisingly low, subscription-free price. ![]() |
